What a Coinkydink: Episode 61 (The Detroit Rebellion of '67)

In this episode, we are drinking a Stinger, an upper class society drink that is strong, sweet and minty. This creme de menthe based cockation (that is good at masking the flavor or subpar prohibition spirits) matches the era of TUX’s scandal.

TUX does a deep dive into Detroit's early history leading up to the racist reasons for and devastating effect of redlining and the interstate highway system. We 🥂cheers to treating people like people.

They Stole My Wigwam: Episode 45 (Bacon's Rebellion & the Invention of Race)

In this very special episode in honor of Black History Month we are drinking the precursor to the cocktail, a Early Colonial Rum Punch. This proto-cocktail is an adaptation of a 1668 recipe using ingredients found in colonial America, the era of STEPHANIE’s scandal. Do check out the minisode where TUX does a deep dive into the history of punch.

STEPHANIE’s scandal is Bacon's Rebellion and how in its aftermath the construct of race was reverse engineered to maintain ruling class power. We raise our glasses to a quote from the late great Queen Toni Morrison: “The real enemy is, and to know the function, the very serious function of racism, which is distraction. Minisode 12: Representation in the Media

This minisode we discuss media representation of marginalized people. We talk about why it is important to us personally and to the world at large. STEPHANIE chats Rugrats' Suzy Carmichael and how refreshing it was to finally see a regular black family, that mirrored her own, represented in a multi-dimensional way.

This minisode we discuss media representation of marginalized people. We talk about why it is important to us personally and to the world at large.

STEPHANIE chats Rugrats’ Suzy Carmichael and how refreshing it was to finally see a regular black family, that mirrored her own, represented in a multi-dimensional way. The discussion turns to Marvel’s Black Panther and how when people have the freedom to tell their own stories they connect with wider audiences.

TUX reflects on the one-dimensional gay caricatures in the early 90s (from creepy dude to flamboyant man to the GBF) and how difficult this made navigating identity in a small town as a teen with few allies. Thankfully by the late 90s gay media created by and for gay people debuted starting the wave of real onscreen representation we so desperately needed.

We want to hear from YOU! Do you agree that it’s important to see diversity in media representation? Do you disagree? If so, why? We’d love to hear stories about the first time you saw something that you really identified with or that made a big positive impression on you. What ways have you’ve felt isolated because you didn’t see yourself represented in media? What/who do you think we are not seeing enough of? Please share some of your favorite movies, shows, musicians, politicians etc that inspire you to live in your truth. Please send your stories and anecdotes—any feedback you have, we’d love to hear it!

Minisode 3: Your Slavery Education Stories

We're back with another minisode with YOUR thoughts and stories on a heavy but important subject: TEACHING CHILDREN ABOUT SLAVERY! We believe that taking a more honest approach to this country's foundation would make this country stronger as a whole. Slavery in the United States is not just Black History, it is American History.

We’re back with another minisode with YOUR thoughts and stories on a heavy but important subject: TEACHING CHILDREN ABOUT SLAVERY! We believe that taking a more honest approach to this country’s foundation would make this country stronger as a whole. Slavery in the United States is not just Black History, it is American History.

With the help of our brave listeners, we discuss the teaching of black history month in a New Orleans public school, a pricey New England boarding school and a predominately LatinX public school in Massachusetts. We hear from parents of kids in public schools, a parent who supplements their child’s education at-home, and another parent who homeschools her children.

Thank you all so so so very much for reaching out to us with such thoughtful insights on this very challenging topic. Y’all came through with such strong feedback this episode! We can’t tell you how much we appreciate it, and how good it makes us feel to know there are so many out there who feel just as strongly about the need to talk openly about American History as we do.

Honestly. It means so much to us.

………………………………………………………………

To prepare for our next minisode, we also announce next month’s subject, and ask you to write/call in with your thoughts and stories on that subject.

An Instagram post we put up, taken from a Texas textbook, caused quite a stir. The post, which highlights an intentionally misleading portrayal of slavery, introduced us to our first white supremacist troll. As nube podcast hosts are still navigating the world of social media promotion and would love to hear about your experiences with internet trolls. Trolls, according to wiki, is a person who starts quarrels or upsets people on the Internet to distract and sow discord by posting inflammatory and digressive, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community with the intent of provoking readers into displaying emotional responses and normalizing tangential discussion--whether for the troll's amusement or a specific gain. How do you handle trolls, in what situations do they appear, what things are you discussing, on what platforms?

Please listen to the episode and drop us a line by Saturday January 12th. We’ll read our favorite responses on minisode 4 next month!
You can send us a voice memo or email us at BeyondReproachPod@gmail.com, or feel free to slip into our DMs if you're feeling cheeky. Just be sure to get those responses back to us no later than 1/12.

We can’t wait to hear from you!!!
