American Legends: Episode 10 (Johnny Appleseed & Davy Crockett)

To commemorate the final episode of Season 1 we imbibe on a refreshing [Jack Rose cocktail](https://www.beyondreproachpod.com/the-cocktails/2019/5/17/episode-10-the-jack-rose), made with Applejack, America's first spirit. We learn about the history of its distillation and how it links to Tux's scandal.

To commemorate the final episode of Season 1 we imbibe on a refreshing Jack Rose cocktail made with Applejack, America’s first spirit. We learn about the history of its distillation and how it links to Tux’s scandal. We depart slightly from our politically scandalous program to explore two folk heroes of American foundational mythology Johnny Appleseed and Davy Crockett, revealing how their real stories are more scandalous than the fairytale portrayals we learned about in grade school.

Also covered: Stephanie’s lies, our summer break, brain damage lite, apple botany, the state of Franklin, sick burns and dolphins.

Tux explores how Johnny Appleseed wasn’t the quirky selfless loner travelling around sprinkling appleseeds so that future settlers would have a wholesome food source when they arrived at the frontier. In reality he was much more of a shrewd real estate developer and a hippie mystic than a promoter of apple consumption.

Stephanie dives into the life and times of Davy Crockett. Every election cycle Americans threaten to move if the wrong person is elected, this threat is not a contemporary one. Davy Crockett, the legendary frontiersman is by far the most infamous to make this pledge. He swore that if Martin Van Buren was elected president, he would never set foot in this country again.

Minisode 7: The Wrap Up

We be drinkin' and we be chattin'! We don't have listener mail or a new topic for the next minisode, we are instead talking about ourselves, reflecting on the evolution of the podcast over this first season, and announcing our summer break listener feedback contest.

We be drinkin’ and we be chattin’!

We don’t have listener mail or a new topic for the next minisode, we are instead talking about ourselves, reflecting on the evolution of the podcast over this first season, and announcing our summer break listener feedback contest. Special thanks to Tim Cluff our sound engineer, editor, sounding board, podfather etc. Without his tireless efforts and constant feedback the podcast wouldn’t exist. Team Beyond Reproach will return in August with season 2 but in the meantime we have a call to arms for our amazing listeners (one that includes a giveaway)!

We need your help to ascend the historical podcast rankings and take our rightful place on the throne. Everyone who listens to podcasts has the same goals: be inspired, be entertained, or be educated. I like to think that we do all three but that might be the rosé talking… Rankings on both iTunes and Stitcher are determined by four factors: subscribers, downloads, ratings and reviews. The more of each we have, the higher the podcast ranks. The higher it ranks, the more people we get to reach! Long thoughtful reviews are great but a 5 star review with several eggplant emojis would really make our day as well.

The winning reviewer(s) will get some fancypants Beyond Reproach swag in our season 2 listener feedback giveaway! There is one more full episode to come but for the latest news please check our website. Don’t be scurr’d, we will be back August 5th!!

Tux revisits our 22nd and 24th president “Grover the Good,” (or as he should be known “Grover the Garbage Juice” or “Groper Cleveland”). Last episode Tux explored how before Cleveland ran for president he was busy being a womanizing scumbag and alleged rapist in upstate New York. This time we learn how he was still a bachelor when he was sworn into the Oval Office but he quickly moved on from stealing babies to robbing the cradle and the American public was super happy about it!

We be drinkin' and we be chattin' about our listener mail! We are back with another minisode with YOUR thoughts and stories on a very important subject: STAYING SANE IN AN INSANE WORLD! On our previous minisode we shared personal strategies for combating stress and talked about our favorite self-care rituals that keep us feeling good when the world around us feels bleek. This episode we flip this question to y’all!

We read an email from our favorite Ohio listener who shares some of her tried and true moves for tackling her social anxiety. Tux’s high school bestie weighs in with her experiences standing up for marginalized communities after returning home to a small town after nearly a decade spent living in a progressive Northeastern bubble. Two mental health pros Canh Tran, MSW and Kimberly Beury, LMHC LPC, offer some professional guidance on how best to alleviate stress at both micro and macro levels.

Y’all came through with such thoughtful feedback this episode! Like Tim, y’all are the real MVPs! Do hug yourselves for us in a lingering but non-creepy way, thanks loves!

Minisode 5: Staying Sane in an Insane World

We be drinkin’ and we be chattin’!

We don’t have listener mail this episode but we are announcing the topic for next month’s minisode -- the very important topic of anxiety, stress management and self care under our current administration.

A survey by the American Psychiatric Association found that anxiety more than doubled from 2017 to 2018. The good news is that we aren’t alone, we aren’t imagining it and this level of anxiety will have an end date. We just need to keep taking care of ourselves, so we can stay angry, stay connected and stay whole in the process of fighting the good fight!

We discuss our mental health struggles, past and present, exploring the changes we’ve experienced over the last couple years. We talk about what we are doing to keep ourselves feeling good despite the political chaos that surrounds us. We chat about some of our favorite self care rituals from Drag Race, lollipops, and curating social media feeds to TCM, baking, and starting a podcast! Tux chats about small but impactful ways to make a positive difference in your community like voting and volunteering.

We want to hear from YOU! We want to know how you keep sane in an insane world? We want to know how your mental health issues are manifesting, what is making you feel stressed and in what ways do you cope when these negative feelings arise?

You can send us a voice memo or email us at BeyondReproachPod@gmail.com, or feel free to slip into our DMs if you're feeling cheeky. Don’t be strangers and say hi! Just be sure to get those responses back to us no later than 3/16.

Stephanie’s scandal is a foundational one about the Cherokee Nation’s Trail of Tears, that massive genocidal redistribution scheme in which a native people, who had won their sovereignty case in front of the Supreme Court, lost everything they had because the executive branch refused to follow the judiciary. Minisode 4: Please Don't Feed the Trolls

We be drankin’ and we be chattin’ about our listener mail! We are back with another minisode with YOUR thoughts and stories on a light albeit frustrating subject: INTERNET TROLLS!

As a podcast our strategy of ignoring and blocking is highly effective but painfully boring. We solicited stories from listeners about how they deal with internet trolls. With their help we get a bunch of novel options for managing those anonymous under-bridge dwellers.

We hear a voicemail from culinary historian Sarah Lohman who explains her tiers of trolldom and how she responds to each. Cara Nicoletti, brooklyn-based triple threat (butcher, baker, and author), shares the ways she cares for herself amidst frequent sexist attacks online. The Wine, Women and Words podcast and Karina Sahlin from We're Just Here To Help podcast both weigh in with their most creative methods of countering trolls. Annie, our favorite listener, wrote in with a deliciously fun spin on responding to the worst people on the internet-- Troll Cakes, the bakery/detective agency here that will send a cake to your troll with their comments written on it.

Minisode 3: Your Slavery Education Stories

We're back with another minisode with YOUR thoughts and stories on a heavy but important subject: TEACHING CHILDREN ABOUT SLAVERY! We believe that taking a more honest approach to this country's foundation would make this country stronger as a whole. Slavery in the United States is not just Black History, it is American History.

We’re back with another minisode with YOUR thoughts and stories on a heavy but important subject: TEACHING CHILDREN ABOUT SLAVERY! We believe that taking a more honest approach to this country’s foundation would make this country stronger as a whole. Slavery in the United States is not just Black History, it is American History.

With the help of our brave listeners, we discuss the teaching of black history month in a New Orleans public school, a pricey New England boarding school and a predominately LatinX public school in Massachusetts. We hear from parents of kids in public schools, a parent who supplements their child’s education at-home, and another parent who homeschools her children.

Thank you all so so so very much for reaching out to us with such thoughtful insights on this very challenging topic. Y’all came through with such strong feedback this episode! We can’t tell you how much we appreciate it, and how good it makes us feel to know there are so many out there who feel just as strongly about the need to talk openly about American History as we do.

Honestly. It means so much to us.

………………………………………………………………

To prepare for our next minisode, we also announce next month’s subject, and ask you to write/call in with your thoughts and stories on that subject.

An Instagram post we put up, taken from a Texas textbook, caused quite a stir. The post, which highlights an intentionally misleading portrayal of slavery, introduced us to our first white supremacist troll. As nube podcast hosts are still navigating the world of social media promotion and would love to hear about your experiences with internet trolls. Trolls, according to wiki, is a person who starts quarrels or upsets people on the Internet to distract and sow discord by posting inflammatory and digressive, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community with the intent of provoking readers into displaying emotional responses and normalizing tangential discussion--whether for the troll's amusement or a specific gain. How do you handle trolls, in what situations do they appear, what things are you discussing, on what platforms?

Please listen to the episode and drop us a line by Saturday January 12th. We’ll read our favorite responses on minisode 4 next month!

Our idea is that to move forward as a nation into a less racist future, we need to face and confront our racist past in a much more real way. While stories of slavery and segregation are taught to young people in schools, it often seems that those subjects are whitewashed, glossed over, or rushed through, because as a nation we’re uncomfortable with the horrors of our past. We believe that really facing that part of our history, through our education system, could do some real good when it comes to beginning to heal the wounds of racism in the future, and we’d love to hear your thoughts on that.

Welcome to the Beyond Reproach Podcast!

Beyond Reproach is a comedic history podcast about scandals and scandalousness in politics and government. Each episode, hosts Stephanie & Tux explore the sordid stories of America's past, all while drinking heavily, talking too much, and generally making fools of themselves. They hope that these stories entertain you, teach you a thing or two, and maybe even draw parallels between the mistakes of the past and the quagmire that is American politics today.
